The liberation of Roland becomes one of the first key tasks for the new Vault Hunter. After his rescue, Roland becomes one of the player's main mentors and allies. He coordinates the actions of the Crimson Raiders from Sanctuary, assigns missions, and directs efforts to counter Handsome Jack's plans. Roland appears as an experienced and charismatic leader who, despite the difficult circumstances, does not lose his resolve or faith in victory. He shows care for his comrades and the inhabitants of Sanctuary, making him not just a commander but a true hero to those around him. A key moment in the "Road to Sanctuary" is Hyperion's attack on the city. Handsome Jack discovers the location of the resistance stronghold and launches a massive assault. At this critical moment, it is Roland, along with other key characters and the player, who participates in the defense of the city. The climax is the realization of "Plan B," during which Lilith, another heroine from the first game, uses her Siren abilities to teleport the entire city to safety. Roland's tragic fate befalls him later in the plot. During an operation to rescue Angel, Handsome Jack's daughter and a Siren whom Jack used to power a Vault key, Roland is killed by Jack himself. His death is a shocking and pivotal moment in the story, further motivating the Vault Hunters and the Crimson Raiders to avenge him and stop the tyrant.
