Description

Darwin's Paradox! is a 2026 2.5D platform video game developed by the Paris-based ZDT Studio and published by Konami. Serving as the inaugural release for the newly formed development team, the game casts players in the unique role of a blue octopus named Darwin. Released on April 2, 2026, for the PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox Series X and Series S, and the Nintendo Switch 2, the title combines natural animal survival mechanics with an eccentric science-fiction narrative. The story begins peacefully in the ocean before taking a bizarre turn when Darwin and his cephalopod companion are abducted by a UFO. They are transported to a mysterious new food corporation known as UFOOD. Separated from his friend, Darwin is forced to navigate a dangerous industrial complex to orchestrate a rescue and ultimately find a way back home to the sea. Along the way, players uncover a much darker conspiracy involving corporate experiments, mind control, and an impending extraterrestrial invasion of Earth. To survive this perilous environment, the gameplay leans heavily into the biology of an octopus. Players traverse the platforming levels by utilizing Darwin's natural abilities, using his suction-cup-lined arms to maneuver and shooting ink to overcome obstacles and adversaries. The background of the game's development brings together notable industry talent. Originally announced in 2022, the project was notably associated with former Arkane Lyon studio director Romuald Capron. ZDT Studio itself was founded by Cedric Lagarrigue, alongside Creative Director Gilles Aujard and Artistic Director Mikael Tanguy. In shaping the game's mood and mechanics, the team drew inspiration from acclaimed atmospheric platformers like Limbo and Little Nightmares. Furthermore, the game's title is rooted in actual scientific history. It directly references the biological conundrum described in Charles Darwin's 1842 monograph on coral reefs, which questions how such diverse ecosystems can inexplicably thrive in nutrient-deprived tropical waters. The road to launch featured a few notable shifts in the release schedule. After being formally revealed during a PlayStation State of Play presentation in February 2025, the game experienced a delay in November of that year. During this time, it was announced that the originally planned Nintendo Switch version was being scrapped in favor of a release on the newer Nintendo Switch 2. Upon its eventual release in April 2026, Darwin's Paradox! garnered mixed to average reviews from critics. Review aggregator Metacritic recorded scores in the low to mid-70s across all platforms, while OpenCritic noted a fair approval rating with 67 percent of critics recommending the title. Major gaming publications, including IGN, GameSpot, and Game Informer, generally awarded the game a 7 out of 10, marking it as a creatively intriguing, albeit imperfect, debut for ZDT Studio.
