Borderlands 4: Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned
Description
Borderlands 4 continues the franchise's legacy of chaotic looter-shooter action, eccentricity, and expansive sci-fi environments. This foundation is significantly enriched by the first major story expansion, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, which transports players to the icy planet of Kairos. Alongside a new playable Vault Hunter, C4SH the Rogue, and a wealth of powerful gear, the DLC features an array of side missions that deepen the cosmic-horror atmosphere of The Whispering Glacier. Among these, the "Voices Carry" mission stands out as a poignant blend of the series’ signature dark humor and unsettling psychological dread.
Available after completing the main story mission "It Grows Below," the quest begins at The Speakeasy, where a survivor named McKinney recruits the player to silence the voices of his fallen squad. McKinney is haunted by the whispers of his former comrades, who perished when a moon-related catastrophe allowed an alien monolith to influence their remains. He believes his men have returned as soul-eating zombies, and he tasks the Vault Hunter with finding them to retrieve their dog tags and end his torment.
The mission takes a technical turn as players navigate the icy wastes to investigate the anomaly. Rather than literal ghosts, the player discovers that the voices are actually looping distress signals emanating from the soldiers' damaged communication gear. To locate the squad, the player must engage in a scavenger hunt, repairing local communication towers while destroying corrupted ones to clear the signal. This mechanic forces players to navigate the hostile environment and interact with the landscape in meaningful ways.
Once the coordinates are triangulated, the mission shifts into an intense firefight against zombified DAHL soldiers. After neutralizing these reanimated threats, the player returns the dog tags to McKinney. By burning the tags, he finds closure, silencing the digital ghosts for good. Rewarding players with experience, cash, and exclusive equipment, "Voices Carry" exemplifies the expansion's ability to weave tragic, science-fiction tropes into the visceral, gun-heavy gameplay that defines the Borderlands universe.
