Borderlands 4: Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned
Description
Borderlands 4 continues the franchise's legacy of chaotic looter-shooter action, eccentric personalities, and sprawling sci-fi worlds. This latest entry transports players to the mysterious planet of Kairos, a setting further expanded by its first major story expansion, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned. This DLC introduces a layer of cosmic horror to the familiar mayhem, tasking players with assisting Ellie and the enigmatic Mancubus Bloodtooth as they navigate The Whispering Glacier to breach a cursed vault. Amidst this frozen landscape, players can experience the unique gameplay of the new Vault Hunter, C4SH the Rogue, and hunt for powerful new gear.
Within this chilling expansion, the side mission "Summoner's Gift" stands out as a quintessential example of the series' signature blend of absurdity and dark humor. Unlocked after completing the main story mission "What Lies Dreaming," the quest is initiated by an NPC named Belle in the western region of Crooked Teeth. Belle and her band of demon hunters aim to summon a legendary entity of pure hatred, promising the player either complete destruction or the granting of their deepest desires.
To facilitate this risky ritual, the player must embark on a multi-part fetch quest. First, they must travel to a northern tomb, utilizing the game's movement mechanics to perform precise ground slams that shatter barriers and activate ritual circles to retrieve an ancient egg. Next, the player heads south to secure a tainted, beating heart, which requires clearing out hostile Scavs and solving an environmental puzzle involving grappling-hook-activated levers to align cryptic symbols.
The mission culminates at the summoning site where, after placing the artifacts, the ritual goes hilariously awry. Instead of an eldritch horror, the summoners conjure a demon named Greg. The resulting encounter forces the player to dispatch the failed summoners, leaving them to interact with an underwhelming, non-hostile Greg. The rewards for this endeavor include cash, Eridium, experience, and a themed SMG. Most notably, players receive the "Summoner's Gift" cosmetic head, and completion is a requirement for the "Looking for Work at the Top of the World" achievement. It is a perfectly bizarre, must-play distraction within the icy horrors of Kairos.
