Among the many colorful and morally ambiguous characters populating Pandora in Borderlands 2, the duo of "Doctor" Zed Blanco and the researcher Patricia Tannis stand out, particularly through their involvement in the quest "Don't Try This at Home." This quest, and their interactions, serve as a microcosm of the game's signature dark humor and questionable ethics.
Doctor Zed, a character whose medical credentials are as dubious as his hygiene, operates his medical practice with a complete disregard for conventional licensing. He's known for his cynical attitude and his disdain for those with actual medical training, especially Tannis. Despite his self-proclaimed "not a real doctor" status, Zed plays a crucial role in keeping Vault Hunters alive, albeit through decidedly unconventional and often gruesome methods. The quests he offers typically involve his grotesque experiments and dubious medical procedures, perfectly encapsulating the game's dark comedic tone.
Patricia Tannis, on the other hand, is a brilliant but deeply asocial scientist whose sanity has been eroded by isolation and the traumatic experiences on Pandora. Her extensive research into alien technology and vaults, often conducted with little regard for her own safety or that of others, makes her an invaluable, if unsettling, resource. Diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, her social awkwardness and intellectual arrogance are evident in her interactions, yet her expertise on Eridium and Eridian technology is critical for the Vault Hunters' progress.
The quest "Don't Try This at Home" brilliantly encapsulates the dynamic between Zed and Tannis and exemplifies Borderlands 2's brand of humor. Zed tasks the player with performing a "surgical operation" on a Hyperion soldier, which involves a rather blunt chest incision to extract an Eridium shard. This shard, described as "freshly ripped from the chest," is then to be delivered to Tannis, the recognized authority on Eridium. The quest's title is a blatant and mocking reference to the Hippocratic Oath, a cornerstone of medical ethics, highlighting how norms are twisted on Pandora.
The relationship between Zed and Tannis is complex, marked by Zed's open contempt for Tannis's "proper doctor" status, yet he still relies on her expertise. Later content reveals a deeper, perhaps even romantic, interest from Zed towards Tannis, showcasing a rare vulnerability beneath his cynical exterior. Players generally embrace these characters, finding their eccentricities and the dark humor surrounding them to be among the most memorable aspects of Borderlands 2. Their stories, filled with tragedy and absurd comedy, perfectly align with the game's ethos where laughter and violence go hand in hand.
