Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
ລາຍລະອຽດ
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, a first-person shooter, serves as a narrative bridge between the original Borderlands and its sequel, charting Handsome Jack’s descent from Hyperion programmer to megalomaniacal villain. Set on Pandora’s moon, Elpis, and the orbiting Hyperion station, it retains the series’ signature cel-shaded art and humor. New mechanics like low-gravity combat, featuring higher jumps and strategic Oz kits for oxygen management, significantly alter gameplay. Cryo and laser weapons introduce fresh tactical options. Four distinct playable characters – Athena, Wilhelm, Nisha, and Claptrap – offer diverse playstyles. Cooperative multiplayer remains central, amplifying the chaos and camaraderie. The game delves into themes of power, corruption, and moral ambiguity, challenging players to consider the complex nature of heroism and villainy in the Borderlands universe, all while satirizing corporate greed and authoritarianism. While praised for its engaging gameplay and narrative depth, it faced criticism for perceived lack of innovation.
"Sub-Level 13: Part 2" in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is a standout side mission that masterfully blends atmospheric storytelling with a compelling player choice. Following the discovery of a previous adventurer’s demise, the player is tasked with retrieving a space-fold inverter from the supposedly haunted Sub-Level 13. The mission cleverly reveals that the spectral apparitions are not ghosts in the traditional sense, but rather the fragmented, endlessly reconstructed remnants of a Dahl scientist, Schmidt, merged with a Tork during a teleporter malfunction. To combat these ethereal entities, the player utilizes the E-Gun, a unique laser weapon, directly inspired by the iconic Proton Packs from Ghostbusters. This particular weapon is the only effective means against the spectral menace, adding a fun, thematic layer to the gameplay. The climax presents a significant choice: side with the greedy scavenger Pickle and claim the inverter for a decent reward, or use the inverter to fix the fast travel system, freeing Schmidt from her digital torment. Choosing Pickle yields a functional, though relatively common, grenade mod. Opting to aid Schmidt, however, results in the permanent acquisition of the powerful, non-elemental E-Gun, a reward that is both unique and thematically resonant with its "Kills ghosts, apparently" red text. This mission exemplifies the moral greyness of the Borderlands series, forcing players to weigh personal gain against altruism, and in doing so, offering a memorable and rewarding experience.
