The next big thing in looter-shooter gaming, *Borderlands 4*, dropped on September 12, 2025, by Gearbox Software and 2K. It's out on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, with a Switch 2 version coming later. This game takes us six years after *Borderlands 3* to a new planet called Kairos, where a fresh crew of Vault Hunters lands to find a legendary Vault and help the locals rebel against the tyrannical Timekeeper and his robot army. Lilith's actions accidentally revealed Kairos, and now the Timekeeper has captured the new Vault Hunters, forcing them to team up with the Crimson Resistance. Players can choose from four new Vault Hunters: Rafa the Exo-Soldier with an experimental exo-suit, Harlowe the Gravitar who manipulates gravity, Amon the Forgeknight who's all about melee, and Vex the Siren, the new Siren with phase energy powers. Familiar faces like Moxxi, Marcus, Claptrap, Zane, Lilith, and Amara will also make appearances. The world of Kairos is a seamless open-world experience across four regions: the Fadefields, Terminus Range, Carcadia Burn, and the Dominion, with no loading screens between zones. Movement is super dynamic with grappling hooks, gliding, dodging, and climbing. The game features a day-night cycle and weather. The core loot-and-shoot gameplay is still there, with tons of guns and deep character customization. *Borderlands 4* can be played solo or with up to three others online, with split-screen co-op on consoles and crossplay at launch. A cool new feature in *Borderlands 4* is "Mob Justice," a system that reflects the chaotic and often brutal spirit of the Borderlands universe. On Kairos, where the Timekeeper’s synthetic followers oppress the populace, the resistance isn't always about organized military action. When players encounter groups of particularly nasty enemies or those who have committed egregious acts against the locals, they can trigger a "Mob Justice" event. This isn't a formal quest, but rather an emergent gameplay mechanic. For instance, if players witness a group of synthetic enforcers mistreating civilians, they might have a prompt appear to initiate "Mob Justice." Upon activation, the situation quickly escalates. Any nearby civilian NPCs, or even certain less hostile creatures on Kairos, might join the fray against the designated enemy mob. These reinforcements are not as powerful as the Vault Hunters, but they add a chaotic element, distracting enemies, providing covering fire, or even charging in for melee attacks. The effectiveness of "Mob Justice" also depends on the player's actions. For example, if a player is equipped with weapons that cause crowd control effects, like incendiary grenades or electric shotguns, they can create even more mayhem, turning the tide of the spontaneous uprising. Successfully completing a "Mob Justice" event often rewards players with bonus loot from the defeated enemies, reputation with the local resistance factions, and sometimes even unique cosmetic items that showcase their commitment to liberating Kairos.
