Description
Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion is a role-playing video game developed by Climax Studios and published by Outright Games. It was released in July 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows, later becoming available on Amazon Luna in December 2021 and Google Stadia in March 2022. The game is based on the popular Cartoon Network animated series *Adventure Time* and is set during the events of its tenth and final season.
The game's narrative begins as the protagonists, Finn the Human and Jake the Dog, awaken to discover that the Land of Ooo has been mysteriously and catastrophically flooded. The Ice Kingdom has melted, submerging the world they know. Their investigation leads them to the Ice King, who reveals he lost his crown and, in a fit of frustration, caused the meltdown. Finn and Jake set sail on a newly acquired boat to solve the mystery. Their journey to restore Ooo involves traveling to familiar locations like the Candy Kingdom and Fire Kingdom. Along the way, they are joined by their friends BMO and Marceline the Vampire Queen, forming a party of four playable characters. The heroes soon find themselves entangled with pirates and uncover a larger conspiracy orchestrated by Princess Bubblegum's nefarious relatives—Uncle Gumbald, Aunt Lolly, and Cousin Chicle—who are attempting to seize control of the Candy Kingdom.
The gameplay of Pirates of the Enchiridion blends open-world exploration with turn-based RPG combat. Players navigate the flooded lands of Ooo in a boat, a mechanic that has drawn comparisons to *The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker*. While exploring, players can disembark at various kingdoms and locations to undertake main story missions and side quests. The combat system is a traditional turn-based affair, often described as a simplified introduction to the genre, making it accessible for younger players or newcomers but potentially unchallenging for experienced RPG veterans. Each of the four playable characters possesses unique abilities that can be used both in and out of combat. For instance, Jake can transform to reach higher ledges, and Marceline can use stealth to bypass enemies. A distinct feature is the "Interrogation Time" minigame, where Finn and Jake engage in a good cop/bad cop routine to extract information from various characters, a segment praised for capturing the show's humor. The main story can be completed in approximately 10 to 12 hours.
Critically, *Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion* received mixed or average reviews. The game was widely praised for its faithful adherence to the source material, successfully recreating the vibrant art style, quirky humor, and overall charm of the animated series. The return of the original voice cast was also a highlight, lending authenticity to the characters and dialogue. However, the gameplay was a common point of criticism, with many reviewers finding it to be simplistic, repetitive, and lacking in strategic depth. While the world was visually appealing, it was often described as feeling empty and barren. The game also suffered from technical issues, including frame rate drops, lag, and long loading times, which were reported to be particularly problematic on the Nintendo Switch version. Despite its flaws, it is often considered one of the better video game adaptations of the *Adventure Time* franchise, particularly for fans of the show.
