Borderlands 3
Description
Borderlands 3, a first-person shooter known for its vibrant cel-shaded graphics and extensive loot system, introduces players to a chaotic galaxy under threat from the Calypso Twins. Amidst the explosive combat and irreverent humor, the game features a side mission titled Wildlife Conservation, offering a glimpse into the lives and concerns of its characters beyond the main storyline.
This mission, accessed after completing "Life of the Party" and reaching level 30, begins in Konrad's Hold and is initiated by Brick. He expresses concern over the disappearance of Talon, a beloved creature with a strong bond to Mordecai. The objective is to find Talon before Mordecai discovers her absence, setting a slightly anxious tone amidst the usual Borderlands mayhem.
The quest guides players through the gritty environment of Konrad's Hold. Players must first inspect a corpse for clues, which leads them to a blood trail. Following this trail necessitates gathering five explosives to breach a locked gate, an interactive puzzle element that breaks up the combat flow. Launching a minecart filled with explosives by shooting a propane tank creates an explosive opening, literally.
Progression through the mines involves tracking Talon and engaging in combat with varkids, adding a layer of danger and requiring players to utilize their character's unique abilities. The successful tracking eventually leads back to Devil's Razor, where Brick reveals Talon returned only to fly off again. The mission concludes with a conversation with Mordecai, symbolizing the resolution of the search, even if Talon's final whereabouts remain somewhat ambiguous.
Wildlife Conservation serves as a nice nod to previous Borderlands titles, referencing the Wildlife Preservation mission from Borderlands 2. It highlights the depth of character relationships, particularly the bond between Brick, Mordecai, and Talon, adding emotional weight to the often-absurd world. The mission provides players with a unique sniper rifle, The Hunt(er), alongside experience and currency rewards. It’s a well-designed side quest that encapsulates the Borderlands experience: a blend of exploration, combat, character interaction, and a touch of the series' signature charm.
