Borderlands 3: Guns, Love, and Tentacles
Description
Borderlands 3 is a vibrant, cel-shaded looter-shooter known for its chaotic gunplay, quirky humor, and extensive loot systems. The game features multiple Vault Hunters, each with unique abilities, who journey across various planets to stop powerful villains. "Guns, Love, and Tentacles," the second major DLC, takes players to the icy world of Xylourgos for the wedding of Sir Alistair Hammerlock and Wainwright Jakobs, which is quickly disrupted by a Lovecraftian cult.
Within this expansion, Negul Neshai is a formidable mountain range on Xylourgos, described as a "pale king." Its name, humorously translated by Gaige as related to "soul obliteration" and "tortured soul," hints at the perils within. This frigid pass is crucial to the narrative, serving as the location of a crashed research vessel belonging to the cult. Players first encounter it en route to uncover the source of Wainwright's curse.
Accessing Negul Neshai involves traversing the Skittermaw Basin and Cankerwood before passing a gate guarded by Eista. The primary exploration occurs during the mission "On the Mountain of Mayhem," where players ascend the treacherous slopes to find an abandoned Dahl research facility and the crashed ship, "The Dyad." Navigating the Winterdrift Outpost, a former Dahl observation post, requires battling defense cannons and repairing machinery.
The Dyad, a crashed Dahl research ship, is a key location lodged near the peak. Players explore its hazardous interior with the help of Deathtrap, accessing ship systems and uncovering backstory through holograms. The goal is to reach Xenocardiac Containment, where a crucial plot item, a Gythian Heart Piece, is recovered. This leads to a confrontation with the Empowered Grawn while defending Deathtrap and stabilizing the reactor. The heart piece is later essential in the final mission.
Negul Neshai is populated by various enemies, including Frostbiters, Krich, Wolven, and the cultist Bonded, along with stronger foes like the Kukuwajack and Empowered Grawn. The area also features the Ruins of Yogseer, Eridian structures overrun by Bonded. Beyond the main story, Negul Neshai offers side quests like "The Madness Beneath" and several Crew Challenges, including collecting Gaige’s wedding gifts, hunting the legendary Kukuwajack for Hammerlock, and destroying an Eldritch Statue for Mancubus. The area is briefly visited in the side mission "We Slass."
In essence, Negul Neshai is a challenging and pivotal location in "Guns, Love, and Tentacles." It's a dangerous climb through abandoned facilities and ancient ruins, housing crucial narrative elements and providing ample opportunities for combat and exploration against a backdrop of icy desolation and Lovecraftian influence.
