They learn of Hugo's cursed lineage and the urgent need for protection against the Inquisition. With the help of Laurentius' apprentice, Lucas, they create the "Ignifer" to fend off hordes of rats. However, tragedy strikes when Laurentius’ home is consumed by flames, forcing the children to flee on a boat, marking a significant turning point in their harrowing journey.
