Hogwarts Legacy immerses players in the 1800s wizarding world. As a fifth-year student with a unique ability to see and wield ancient magic, you become entangled in a quest to unravel a mysterious threat connected to a goblin rebellion led by Ranrok. Percival Rackham's Trial is a main quest initiated after discovering the Map Chamber. Professor Fig and the player character investigate a tower where goblins are lurking. After dealing with the goblins outside, it is found that the goblins are also interested in the tower's secrets and are searching for something linked to Ranrok. Inside, the player must use their ancient magic abilities to reveal a hidden trial. The trial chamber tests the player's combat and puzzle-solving skills. Players must defeat Pensieve Protectors, Sentinels, and a giant Pensieve Guardian. The Guardian's orb attacks need to be countered with spells of the corresponding color and make extensive use of ancient magic to bring it down. Puzzles involve manipulating platforms with Accio and navigating portals. Successfully completing the trial reveals a Pensieve memory of Rackham and Isidora Morganach, shedding light on her efforts to alleviate pain with ancient magic. The quest concludes with a conversation with the portrait of Charles Rookwood, who warns of ancient magic hotspots and the growing goblin threat, pushing the season of the game into winter.
