Wolfenstein: The New Order
Description
Wolfenstein: The New Order is a first-person shooter that plunges players into an alternate 1960 where the Nazis have conquered the world. Developed by MachineGames, this title revitalized the classic series by blending intense, old-school gunplay with a compelling narrative and a gritty, oppressive atmosphere. Players take on the role of B.J. Blazkowicz, a seasoned war veteran who awakens from a fourteen-year coma to find a Nazi-dominated planet and joins a fragmented resistance to fight back. The game features a mix of stealth and action, dual-wielding capabilities, and a unique health system.
Chapter 2, titled "Asylum," serves as the abrupt and harrowing reintroduction to B.J.'s story and the game's dystopian setting. Following his severe injury in the prologue, B.J. is found by fishermen and placed in a Polish asylum. He remains in a vegetative state for fourteen years, cared for by Anya Oliwa, the head nurse.
The chapter begins in 1960, depicting B.J.'s lengthy confinement and Anya's devoted care. This period of fragile peace is brutally shattered when Nazi commandos arrive, led by SS-Sturmbannführer Friedrich Keller. The Nazis, viewing the mentally ill as "subhuman," are there to execute the remaining patients and dismiss the staff. Anya’s parents, who run the asylum, are summarily murdered when they attempt to intervene, and Anya is dragged away.
Witnessing this horrific violence triggers B.J.’s awakening. Despite his physical weakness, he reacts to save himself, killing the officer who reaches him. This pivotal moment marks his return to consciousness after fourteen years. He arms himself with a Handgun 1960, an updated version of the World War II era firearm.
The gameplay shifts to B.J.'s desperate escape from the now hostile asylum, which is overrun with Nazi soldiers. Players must navigate the facility, utilizing newfound weapons and the environment for both stealth and direct combat. The objective is to find Anya and escape the building. Upon reaching the front office and unlocking the main doors, B.J. emerges into a chaotic scene on the asylum lawn, where Anya is being held by Nazis. He eliminates the surrounding soldiers and reinforcements.
The escape in a car with Anya confirms the shocking truth – the year is 1960, and the Nazis won the war. This chapter powerfully establishes the brutal reality of the alternate timeline, B.J.’s dependence on Anya, and sets the stage for their journey to resist the Nazi regime. It successfully transitions the player from the World War II conflict to the grim, oppressive world of 1960.
