Within this eerie setting, the Empowered Scholar serves as a significant boss encounter during the mission "The Case of Wainwright Jakobs." A high-ranking member of the Gythian-worshipping cult known as the Bonded, the Scholar is dispatched to the Dustbound Archives to prevent the Vault Hunter from finding a way to remove a cursed ring from Wainwright. The fight against the Empowered Scholar is a multi-phase battle. The Scholar primarily attacks with magma bombs and summons additional Bonded enemies. A key mechanic is the Scholar becoming invulnerable at certain health points, attempting to regenerate by drawing power from floating Shards. Players must quickly destroy these Shards, often requiring platforming to reach them. This regeneration occurs multiple times, with the Scholar retreating to different pillars. As the fight progresses, the Scholar gains shields and armor, demanding players switch elemental weapon types – incendiary for initial health, corrosive for armor and Shards, and shock for shields. Defeating the Empowered Scholar grants access to the Founder's Office and can reward players with the legendary Oldridian submachine gun and Void Rift shield. This boss is considered challenging by some due to its health, resistances, and the need for elemental management and swift action against the regenerating Shards.
