Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a turn-based RPG inspired by Belle Époque France, plunges players into a world marked by the annual "Gommage," where a mysterious Paintress erases people of a specific age. The game's prologue, "Lumiere," introduces this grim reality and core mechanics. Players begin as Gustave, navigating the fractured island of Lumière. An early sequence with Maelle familiarizes players with movement and grappling, followed by a combat tutorial duel. As Gustave and Sophie, players explore the city, learning about its tragic history and the impending Gommage from NPCs. Optional activities abound, from finding currency (Chroma) to engaging in a challenging mini-boss fight against the Mime for rewards. The somber Gommage ceremony precedes the Expedition Festival, a pre-departure event for those embarking on the perilous mission to stop the Paintress. Here, players can earn Festival Tokens through quizzes and duels, exchanging them for crucial items and cosmetic changes.
