Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Description

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG set in a Belle Époque-inspired fantasy world. The game, released in 2025, centers on a desperate quest by Expedition 33 to destroy the mysterious Paintress, who annually erases people of a specific age in an event called the "Gommage." Players control a party of characters, navigating linear levels and engaging in turn-based combat with real-time elements, such as dodging and parrying, to enhance immersion. The game emphasizes character customization and offers a diverse cast with unique skill sets. Within this world, players encounter Noco, a friendly Gestral merchant in the Flying Waters region. Noco plays a crucial role early in Act I, not only for trading but also for story progression, guiding the expedition deeper into Flying Waters and revealing the need to cross another sea to reach the Paintress. His shop, Noco's Hut, also serves as a fast travel point and surprisingly contains a portal to The Manor. A distinctive interaction with Noco involves a one-on-one duel to access his special inventory. Reflecting the Gestral species' love for fighting and respect for mighty warriors, Noco transforms, growing in size and attacking with his bag or fists. This battle, though not overly difficult, is the sole opportunity to unlock his unique wares. Gustave, for example, is well-suited to handle him. Upon defeating Noco, players gain access to his secret stock, prominently featuring the "Exposing Attack" Pictos for 3,600 Chroma. This missable item significantly boosts Speed and Critical Rate, and critically, causes base attacks to apply the "Defenceless" status, increasing target damage by 25%. Noco's regular inventory, available without a fight, includes Chroma Catalysts and Colours of Lumina. Noco's biography reveals him as a Gestral, a humanoid species with wooden puppet-like joints and paintbrush heads. They are generally friendly, competitive, and highly value combat prowess. Noco's personal history is intertwined with Monoco, whom he mentored after the Fracture. Despite an incident involving Monoco and Noco’s rebirth, the Gestral chief, Golgra, supported Noco in establishing his merchant shop. Noco’s ambition to become the greatest merchant by reaching Old Lumière further fuels his decision to join Expedition 33. His presence provides vital support and strategic opportunities for the expedition, showcasing the game's blend of unique character interactions and crucial gameplay mechanics.
