Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Description
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG set in a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France. Developed by Sandfall Interactive, it plunges players into a grim annual event where a being called the Paintress erases people of a specific age. The game follows Expedition 33, a group aiming to destroy the Paintress before she paints "33," leading to their own demise. Blending traditional turn-based mechanics with real-time actions like dodging and parrying, the game offers immersive combat and deep character customization across six unique "Expeditioners."
Within the mystical, underwater-like region known as Flying Waters, a significant and optional mini-boss encounter awaits: the Mime. Despite its aquatic appearance, Flying Waters allows players to breathe and move freely, a crucial location in the search for the character Maelle. This area also holds the remnants of the ill-fated Expedition 68, adding depth to the game’s lore. The Mime in Flying Waters is strategically hidden past the Coral Cave fast travel point. To find it, players must navigate past a colossal Nevron enemy, then locate a hidden path through seaweed to the left of visible handholds. This secret route leads to another set of climbable surfaces, culminating in the Mime’s lair at the top.
Engaging a Mime in combat demands a specific approach. Mimes always initiate a fight by erecting a protective barrier, granting them several shields that must be shattered before any direct damage can be dealt. Free Aim shots or Maelle’s "Breaking Rules" skill are highly effective for this initial phase. Mimes lack specific weaknesses or resistances, and they have no discernible weak spots. Their attack patterns are consistent, including a "Hand-to-hand combo" of two punches and a headbutt, and a "Strange combo" involving four strikes with a translucent weapon, the final hit potentially inflicting Silence. A key strategy against Mimes is to fill their Break Bar, then utilize a "Break" skill to stun them and significantly lower their defense, opening a window for heavy damage.
Defeating the Mime in Flying Waters rewards the player with a "Short" haircut for Maelle and a Colour of Lumina. Other Mimes throughout the game offer a variety of cosmetic items, including outfits and haircuts for different characters, as well as Pictos or music records. These optional encounters add a rewarding layer of exploration and customization to the game, encouraging players to venture off the beaten path.
