Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Description
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a turn-based RPG with real-time combat elements, transports players to a Belle Époque-inspired world facing an annual catastrophe. The Paintress, a mysterious entity, marks a declining number on her monolith each year; anyone of that age vanishes in the "Gommage." Expedition 33, a desperate group of volunteers, embarks on a mission to destroy the Paintress before she paints "33" and erases them all.
Among the early challenges faced by Expedition 33 is François, a peculiar boss encountered in Esquie’s Nest. This large, stationary, turtle-like creature, adorned with glowing blue mushrooms, acts as Esquie’s ill-tempered neighbor. The initial confrontation arises from a quest to retrieve Florrie, a lost rock, for Esquie. Reaching François involves navigating eastern paths, utilizing grapple points, and passing flag checkpoints within Esquie’s elaborate abode, culminating in a cutscene that initiates the battle in his cave.
Despite his imposing appearance, François is often considered one of the easier boss fights in the game due to his limited moveset. However, he possesses a single, devastating attack: an "ice beam" that can instantly kill a party member if not properly handled. This attack is telegraphed by two distinct "beeps" or pulses as François gathers ice particles, followed by a short delay before the laser fires. Mastering the precise timing for a parry or dodge is crucial; a successful parry during the second charge animation or as the beam erupts into a flash can lead to a powerful counter and negate the instant-death effect. Beyond this singular, formidable attack, François remains static and appears to have no other offensive maneuvers. He can also build multiple shields, requiring multi-hit attacks or abilities that apply status effects like Burn to break through before significant damage can be dealt. Dark damage, particularly from characters like Sciel, is also noted as an effective counter.
Upon his defeat, players are rewarded with the Augmented First Strike Pictos, Chroma, and experience. This powerful Pictos grants increased damage on the first hit of a battle, along with boosts to speed and critical rate, making it an unmissable and valuable acquisition. François makes a return later in the game during a side quest tied to Esquie's relationship development, where the player, controlling Verso, faces him in a 1v1 battle to retrieve another rock, Urrie. This subsequent encounter is generally less challenging, often ending swiftly. Successfully completing this quest not only deepens Esquie's bond but also unlocks his crucial Underwater Diving ability, essential for further exploration and discovery.
