Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG set in a Belle Époque-inspired fantasy world. The narrative centers on a grim annual event: the "Gommage," where a mysterious being called the Paintress erases people of a certain age. Players lead Expedition 33, a desperate mission to destroy the Paintress before she paints "33," dooming everyone. Gameplay blends traditional turn-based combat with real-time actions like dodging and parrying, creating dynamic battles where mastering attack rhythms and targeting weak points are crucial. The White-Haired Man, Renoir, is a recurring and formidable antagonist driven to protect his family and the unique reality of the Canvas. His encounters with Expedition 33 culminate in several intense boss fights. The first significant confrontation occurs at the Stone Wave Cliffs, an unwinnable narrative battle following the Lampmaster fight. Here, Renoir ambushes the party, and despite player actions, Gustave sacrifices himself to protect Maelle, dying at Renoir's hands. This tragic event concludes Act 1, leaving the expedition heartbroken. Later, in Old Lumière, a more traditional boss battle against Renoir unfolds. Here, he reveals Verso is his son. Renoir employs diverse attacks: he can summon Chroma pools requiring evasive action, gather massive Chroma for a party-wide assault, and, when wounded, summon healing petals that must be swiftly destroyed. A critical threat is his attempt to vanish a party member, which demands a precise counter. He also summons masks that unleash rapid-fire shots. The final confrontations with Renoir occur at the Monolith, where he guards the path to the Paintress. Another battle ensues, but ultimately, the real-world Renoir, revealed as the Curator, intervenes. With the Curator's aid, Maelle finally destroys the painted version of Renoir, bringing an end to his persistent threat. In total, there are three distinct boss battles against Renoir, with the initial forced-loss encounter setting a poignant precedent for the subsequent, winnable confrontations.
