Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Description
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a turn-based RPG with real-time combat elements, transports players to a Belle Époque-inspired world facing an annual catastrophe: the Gommage, where a mysterious Paintress erases people of a certain age. Players lead Expedition 33, a desperate mission to destroy the Paintress and end her cycle of death. Within this world, the Lampmaster stands as a recurring and formidable boss, testing players' mastery of the game's unique combat system.
This monstrous abomination, formed entirely of arms and integrated with various lamps, first challenges players as the final boss of Act I in the Stone Wave Cliffs. This initial two-phase battle demands strategic engagement. Phase one sees the Lampmaster resistant to Light damage, utilizing physical jump attacks, a dizzying three-strike sword combo, and light-based projectiles from its lamps. Players can temporarily disable these lamps, but the boss will expend a turn to reignite them. It also unleashes a "Dark Explosion" that inflicts significant dark damage and Exhaust.
As the fight progresses to its second phase, the Lampmaster’s attacks escalate. It deploys a four-hit "Arm attack," summons a full-party damaging "Ball of Light" that must be dodged, and most notably, prepares its devastating "Sword of Light" - a whole-party energy blade. To counter this, players must successfully complete the "Lamp Trial" ritual, precisely shooting illuminated lamps in a specific sequence using free-aim. Success cancels the attack and deals damage to the boss, while failure results in catastrophic party damage. Upon its defeat, the Lampmaster yields valuable rewards, including the "At Death's Door" Pictos.
The Lampmaster, however, is not a one-time encounter. It reappears in more powerful forms throughout the game, notably in the Painting Workshop as part of a mystery-solving quest. This iteration possesses enhanced health and damage, immediately employing its Phase II abilities with an even deadlier seven-hit melee combo that can inflict Blight. Further encounters await in the end-game Flying Manor and twice within the challenging Endless Tower gauntlet. Defeating the Lampmaster is crucial for progression and unlocks significant character abilities, such as Monoco's "Lampmaster Light" skill and the "Joyaro" weapon, alongside potent Pictos like "At Death's Door" and "Energising Attack I." The Lampmaster embodies the game's blend of strategic depth and real-time precision, evolving as a constant and rewarding challenge.
