Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Description
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG set in a Belle Époque France-inspired fantasy world. Players lead Expedition 33, a group aiming to destroy the mysterious Paintress, who annually erases people of a specific age. The gameplay blends traditional turn-based combat with real-time elements like dodging, parrying, and free-aiming, creating dynamic battles.
One such challenging encounter is the Dualliste, a significant boss found at the end of the desolate Forgotten Battlefield. This slender, armored Nevron is striking with its two pairs of arms and a formidable long sword. The mandatory two-phase battle demands a strong understanding of the game's mechanics. Resistant to Fire and Dark, the Dualliste is vulnerable to Light attacks, making Verso a key asset.
In the first phase, the Dualliste unleashes a flurry of attacks: a three-hit "Quick attack," a five-hit "Combo attack," and the four-hit "Swinging combo" where players must jump to avoid the second strike. Its "Expedition strike" creates a party-wide shockwave by plunging its sword into the ground.
Upon depleting its health, a cutscene signals the second phase, where the Dualliste summons a second sword, becoming more aggressive. The "Swift attack" transforms into a six-hit combo requiring early jumps to evade. The "Combo attack" extends to a devastating seven or nine-hit sequence culminating in a "Gradient attack" that drains screen color, necessitating a special Gradient Counter. The "Expedition strike" now hits twice. A new, perilous move, "Stormblood," involves a blood clone striking multiple times before the Dualliste delivers a final blow. Critically, as its health dwindles, the Dualliste inflicts "Inverted" status, reversing healing effects to cause damage.
Defeating the Dualliste rewards players with Chroma, Polished Chroma Catalysts, the "Dualiso" weapon for Gustave and Verso, and the "Combo Attack I" Pictos, enhancing speed, critical rate, and adding an extra hit to base attacks. The Dualliste also reappears in the Endless Tower and as a prerequisite for the Clea boss fight. Furthermore, defeating it with Monoco in the party allows him to learn the powerful "Duallist Storm" skill. The Dualliste battle is a true test of skill, offering substantial rewards and contributing to deeper character progression.
