Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 plunges players into a Belle Époque-inspired fantasy world, where a devastating annual event called the "Gommage" threatens humanity. A mysterious Paintress erases anyone of a specific age, with the cursed number decreasing each year. Expedition 33, the latest group of volunteers, embarks on a desperate mission to destroy the Paintress before she reaches "33" and erases everyone. This turn-based RPG blends traditional JRPG mechanics with real-time actions like parrying and dodging, creating immersive combat. Players lead a party of diverse "Expeditioners," each with unique skill sets, exploring linear levels and uncovering the fates of previous failed expeditions. Within the somber, rain-drenched Sadness Vale of the Visages region lies the Sorrowful Chapelier, an optional boss encounter. To trigger this fight, one must approach a sorrowful mask and answer its cryptic question with "Sadness." The Chapelier, an enhanced, evasive flying enemy perched on a rock, is flanked by two allies. It's vulnerable to Dark and Fire but resistant to Ice. The battle's core revolves around the Chapelier's unique attack pattern. It deploys orbiting masks that strike after every action, signaled by a "...?" prompt. The key to victory lies in perfectly timing a parry as a mask descends, triggering a powerful counterattack that can swiftly end the fight. While the overarching Mask of Sadness can randomly inflict "Exhaust," preventing AP gain, this debuff has minimal impact as the parry-counter mechanic, not AP-dependent skills, is the primary means of dealing damage. Defeating the Sorrowful Chapelier rewards players with Boucharo, a weapon for Monoco, and transports them back to the central Visages plaza to continue their perilous expedition.
