Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a visually striking turn-based RPG set in a Belle Époque-inspired world, where a mysterious Paintress annually erases people of a certain age. Players lead Expedition 33 to stop this cycle before the cursed number reaches their own age. Old Lumière is the haunting, ruined remains of the original city, fractured 67 years prior by the Paintress's arrival. Now infested with Nevrons, it’s a sprawling testament to failed past expeditions. Players arrive from Monoco’s Station, encountering merchant Mandelgo before a party-splitting event forces navigation from two perspectives. One group, including Lune, Sciel, and Monoco, navigates Right Street, battling Ceramic and Steel Chevalières, finding powerful gear, and discovering Expedition 58’s tragic journal. Meanwhile, Maelle, Verso, and Noco traverse Left Street, uncovering a Fracture Survivor’s journal and facing Verso’s mysterious disappearance. Both paths converge at the Manor Gardens, leading to a climactic rematch against the formidable boss, Renoir. Post-battle, new areas unlock, revealing Expedition 42’s journal, a healing weapon, and the challenging Chromatic Danseuse optional boss in the Train Station Ruins, further cementing Old Lumière's role as a rich, pivotal location.
