Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a Belle Époque-inspired turn-based RPG where players lead Expedition 33 to stop the Paintress, a being erasing people annually. Combat blends turn-based strategy with real-time dodges and parries, offering deep character customization. The Forgotten Battlefield, a somber, war-torn expanse, follows Act 1. This sprawling ruin, scarred by trenches and littered with past expedition failures, introduces the Gradient Counter mechanic—a defense against color-draining enemy attacks. Players explore the Main Gate, Fort Ruins, and Ancient Bridge, finding hidden Pictos like "Sweet Kill" and "Energising Death," plus journal entries from fallen expeditions 41 and 57. Foes include the armored Chalier and elusive Pétank. Optional boss Chromatic Luster challenges players with burn effects. The region culminates in a two-phase boss battle against the Dualliste on the Ancient Bridge, who can inflict "Inverted" status, turning heals into damage.
