Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG set in a Belle Époque-inspired fantasy world, where players lead Expedition 33 to stop the Paintress, a mysterious being who annually erases people of a certain age. The game blends traditional JRPG mechanics with real-time actions like dodging and parrying, creating immersive and dynamic combat. The Mask Keeper, encountered on Visages' Island, is a pivotal two-phase boss battle. Initially, players confront Visages, a decoy controlled by the true antagonist, the Mask Keeper, also known as "He Who Guards Truth With Lies." The first phase involves defeating Visages, who utilizes various masks to unleash distinct attacks, such as a three-hit combo from the Determination Mask or shield-generating blasts from the Peace Mask. Strategically targeting the masks' glowing eyes prevents their repeated use. Upon Visages' defeat, the true battle against the swift and aggressive Mask Keeper begins. This boss is vulnerable to Dark and Fire damage, making specific party compositions highly effective. The complexity deepens if optional mini-bosses in the island's vales (Anger, Sadness, Joy) were not defeated, as their corresponding masks will assist the Mask Keeper, offering healing, inflicting "Exhaust," or granting extra turns. The Mask Keeper's arsenal is extensive, featuring multi-hit combos, area-of-effect Dark energy waves, and a unique move where its sword ignites for a powerful Gradient Attack. As the fight progresses, the boss introduces new mechanics: at half health, it gains a shield with each successful hit, and near defeat, it buffs its power, defense, and speed, intensifying the final moments. Victory rewards players with the "Immaculate" Pictos, Resplendent Chroma Catalysts, and a Recoat.
