Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Description
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a captivating turn-based RPG set in a Belle Époque-inspired fantasy world. It plunges players into a desperate mission to halt a grim annual event: the "Gommage," where a mysterious Paintress erases people of a specific age. As the cursed number dwindles each year, the stakes rise, culminating in Expedition 33's final, perilous quest to destroy the Paintress before she paints "33." The game masterfully blends traditional JRPG mechanics with real-time combat elements, offering a unique and immersive experience.
Anger Vale stands as a crucial and challenging sub-region within Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, forming one of three emotional vales on the island of Visages. Players venture here after Old Lumière, seeking to defeat two Axons to forge a weapon capable of piercing the Paintress's Monolith. Before confronting the Mask Keeper, the main Axon of Visages, the expedition must overcome the trials of each vale.
In Anger Vale, this culminates in a tense confrontation with a giant floating mask. The correct answer to its riddle, "What am I but a mask of...", is "Anger," which triggers a formidable boss battle against the Seething Boucheclier. This enhanced version of a standard enemy boasts more health and receives an extra turn, making it a true test of the player's combat prowess. Defeating this boss rewards players with Maelle's powerful "Clierum" weapon.
The vale itself is a hazardous environment, characterized by its cavernous, blue-lit passages and rocky facades. It's teeming with dangerous Nevrons like the shielded Bouchecliers, airborne Chapeliers, powerful Contortionistes, and humanoid Moisonneuses. These enemies share a common weakness to Dark and Fire damage while being resistant to Ice, encouraging players to adapt their combat strategies. Navigation through Anger Vale typically begins from the Plazza Expedition Flag, guiding players along the easternmost path.
Beyond its combat challenges, Anger Vale offers valuable discoveries. The potent "Double Burn" Pictos, which doubles applied Burn stacks, is found near a fire-surrounded Expeditioner corpse in a hidden cave. Exploration also reveals a hidden manor door in a blue-illuminated cavern, leading to a secret room containing the "Verso" music disc and an "Unknown" author's philosophical journal. The "Powered Attack" Pictos can also be found after a rope descent, further enriching the player's arsenal. While no numbered Expedition Journals are directly in Anger Vale, the "Unknown" journal offers a unique narrative insight, contributing to the game's rich lore and the tragic history of past expeditions.
