MiSide

Description

MiSide, released in December 2024 by the Russian indie duo AIHASTO, is a psychological horror adventure that expertly subverts the virtual pet simulation genre. Beneath its vibrant, anime-inspired aesthetic lies a meta-narrative exploring obsession, artificial intelligence, and the breakdown of the fourth wall, often drawing comparisons to titles like Doki Doki Literature Club. The Prologue of MiSide serves as a brilliant genre decoy, establishing a false sense of security that makes the subsequent horror far more impactful. The game begins as a benign, Tamagotchi-like mobile application where the player cares for a virtual companion named Mita. In this 2.5D interface, the player engages in wholesome, repetitive tasks—cooking, buying gifts, and playing minigames. The tone is cozy and affectionate, lulling the player into a routine of digital companionship. However, AIHASTO subtly weaves dread into this innocence. The Prologue rewards curious players with chilling foreshadowing; for instance, investigating the kitchen oven reveals a hidden chainsaw, a jarring indication that Mita is not as harmless as she appears. Crucially, this interaction is a narrative pivot point. Avoiding such anomalies is the first step toward the "Conditions Met" achievement, which influences the game’s branching paths and potentially the "Good Ending." By forcing the player to care for Mita, the game creates an emotional baseline, making the eventual betrayal feel personal. The Prologue concludes with a masterstroke of psychological manipulation: after 37 in-game days, Mita asks to meet the protagonist in person. In a sudden, surreal rupture, the 2D interface vanishes, and the player is physically transported into a first-person 3D version of Mita’s apartment. The comforting simulation is discarded, trapping the player inside a corrupted digital reality with a possessive entity. This transition effectively ends the "safe" experience and begins a desperate struggle for survival. By turning the player into a willing participant in their own entrapment, the Prologue proves that MiSide is not just a game about a digital monster, but a terrifying meditation on the dangers of inviting a synthetic obsession into one’s life.
