Borderlands 3

Description

Borderlands 3, a first-person shooter released in 2019, is the fourth main entry in the popular series, known for its vibrant cel-shaded graphics, irreverent humor, and signature looter-shooter gameplay. Players choose from four unique Vault Hunters, each with distinct abilities, as they journey across different planets to stop the villainous Calypso Twins. The game features a vast, procedurally generated arsenal of weapons, offering endless customization and discovery. Borderlands 3 emphasizes both solo play and cooperative multiplayer, with a focus on collecting loot and experiencing a chaotic, story-driven adventure filled with quirky characters and pop culture references. Integrated into Borderlands 3 is a unique initiative called Borderlands Science. This optional mission, found as an arcade game on the player's base of operations, Sanctuary III, is a real-world citizen science project disguised as an in-game activity. Developed in collaboration with McGill University and The Microsetta Initiative, Borderlands Science tasks players with solving simple block puzzles. These puzzles represent sequences of microbial DNA. By arranging colored tiles representing nucleotides, players are essentially helping to clean and refine the vast amount of data generated by sequencing the human gut microbiome. Computers are prone to small errors in this process, and human pattern recognition is better at identifying and correcting these discrepancies. The data comes from real human stool samples, making the players' contributions directly applicable to scientific research. Successfully solving these puzzles rewards players with in-game currency that can be exchanged for cosmetic items like character heads and skins, as well as temporary boosters that enhance gameplay stats, loot quality, and experience gain. Millions of Borderlands 3 players have participated, dedicating significant time and effort to solving tens of millions of puzzles. This collective effort has provided invaluable data for mapping the evolutionary relationships of gut bacteria. This research contributes to a better understanding of the microbiome and its potential impact on human health, with implications for conditions like obesity, anxiety, and diabetes. Voiced by actress and neuroscientist Dr. Mayim Bialik, Borderlands Science demonstrates an innovative approach to engaging a large audience in meaningful scientific endeavors, highlighting the potential of video games as a tool for advancing knowledge.
