The sequel introduces a time-traveling narrative, with players journeying through various historical eras, each presenting distinct environmental challenges and specialized zombie types. A key new mechanic is Plant Food, which can temporarily supercharge a plant's abilities, adding a dynamic layer to combat.
The Dark Ages world in *Plants vs. Zombies 2* presents a unique set of challenges, and its first night level, "Night 1," serves as an excellent introduction to this spooky setting. The most striking feature of this level is its nocturnal nature, which means natural sun production from the sky ceases entirely. This forces players to rely on new, nocturnal plant options. The primary solution presented is the Sun-shroom, a mushroom that gradually produces sun, encouraging a more measured and patient approach to resource management compared to the immediate sun influx of daytime levels. Alongside this, the free and disposable Puff-shroom is introduced, offering vital, albeit temporary, early-game defense against the initial zombie waves.
The Dark Ages environment itself is also distinct, characterized by the presence of gravestones scattered across the lawn. These gravestones act as obstacles, blocking direct projectile attacks and requiring players to employ lobbed-shot plants or focus on destroying them. In a clever twist, some of these gravestones can be destroyed to yield precious sun, offering a tactical opportunity to boost resources. The zombie selection in "Night 1" is generally composed of the basic medieval zombies – Peasant Zombies, Conehead Peasants, and Buckethead Peasants. These familiar archetypes, re-skinned for the era, provide a manageable introduction to the world's new aesthetic and difficulty curve. Successfully navigating "Night 1" requires a strategic balance of planting Sun-shrooms for future sun generation while utilizing Puff-shrooms to protect against immediate threats, gradually introducing more powerful attackers as the sun economy grows. This level masterfully sets the stage for the challenges to come in the Dark Ages.
