Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
ລາຍລະອຽດ
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is a first-person shooter that bridges the gap between the first two Borderlands games, focusing on the transformation of Handsome Jack into the villain players love to hate. Set on Pandora’s moon, Elpis, and the orbiting Hyperion space station, it introduces low-gravity combat and new mechanics like oxygen management, alongside cryo and laser weapons. The game features four new playable characters and retains the series' signature humor and cooperative multiplayer.
"In Perfect Hibernation" is a side mission in *Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel* that truly showcases the game's blend of dark humor and grim narrative. The Vault Hunter encounters Lazlo, a scientist in the Veins of Helios, who believes his colleagues have been infected and turned into cannibals. His bizarre request is for the player to "rescue" them by freezing them solid with a unique cryo-laser, "Lazlo's Freezeasy," in the hopes of preserving them until a cure is found. Lazlo’s earnest pleas to "freeze them to save them, don't shoot them to hurt them" set a somber tone, but the execution of the mission quickly reveals the darkly comedic reality.
As the player ventures into quarantined areas to freeze the infected, any cryo-preserved individuals shatter into pieces. Lazlo’s reaction to this is hilariously morbid: "Oh no, it's shattered! Grab its chunks so that I may honor them." The objective then becomes collecting these "frozen friend chunks" to be used by Lazlo to build an igloo as a monument to his friends. This task highlights the utter futility and absurdity of his plan. Upon completion, the player is rewarded with the "Fridgia," a useful cryo submachine gun.
This mission gains even more depth with its follow-up, "Trouble with Space Hurps." It's revealed that the "infection" is actually a neuro-parasite that Lazlo himself unleashed. ECHO logs expose his failed experiment to create symbiotic companions from "brain bugs," which instead drove hosts to madness and cannibalism. Lazlo, now fully succumbing to the parasite, refers to them as "my pretties" and embraces his cannibalistic urges. The subsequent confrontation with Lazlo forces the player to put him down, revealing the tragic truth behind his earlier plea. "In Perfect Hibernation," especially when paired with its sequel, is a brilliant example of environmental storytelling, presenting a tragic yet comically absurd tale of scientific ambition gone wrong and the horrific consequences of a parasitic outbreak, all wrapped in *Borderlands'* signature dark humor.
