*Clair Obscur: Expedition 33* is a turn-based RPG set in Belle Époque-inspired France, where players lead Expedition 33 to stop the Paintress, a being who erases people annually based on a decreasing cursed number. Combat blends traditional turn-based mechanics with real-time dodges and parries, fostering immersive battles. Old Lumière is a central, ruinous location, once part of the original city of Lumière before the "Fracture" event 67 years prior. This cataclysmic split, coinciding with the Paintress's arrival, cast a portion of the city into the ocean, creating the island of Lumière, while Old Lumière became a Nevron-infested ruin on the mainland. Early search and rescue missions proved futile, with inhabitants lost to attacks and the harsh environment. Subsequent expeditions from the new Lumière, including the ill-fated Expedition 58 and Expedition 42, also perished within its confines, often at the hands of the formidable Renoir. Players enter Old Lumière from Monoco's Station, encountering merchant Mandelgo and navigating the fractured city from two split perspectives after Monoco's accidental shapeshifting. One party explores Right Street, battling Ceramic and Steel Chevalières, uncovering new weapons and Lune's discovery of Expedition 58's journal. The other group traverses Left Street, finding the Fracture Survivor's journal, experiencing Verso's mysterious disappearance, and acquiring the Auto Rush Pictos. Both paths converge near the Manor Gardens, leading to a challenging rematch with Renoir, who employs a variety of attacks including silencing pools, party member "vanishes," and self-healing mechanics. Post-Renoir, Old Lumière offers further secrets: Expedition 42's journal, Lune's Redalim weapon, and the Chromatic Danseuse optional boss at the Train Station Ruins, a difficult foe with shifting elemental stances.
