Borderlands 3

Description

Borderlands 3, a popular first-person shooter released in 2019, continues the franchise's legacy of looter-shooter gameplay with its signature cel-shaded art style, irreverent humor, and vast weapon variety. Players take on the role of one of four distinct Vault Hunters, each with unique abilities, as they journey across multiple planets to stop the villainous Calypso Twins and their cult, the Children of the Vault. The game emphasizes cooperative play, encouraging players to team up and explore its richly detailed worlds. Within the vast expanse of Borderlands 3's content lies the side mission "Homeopathological," found in the Desolation's Edge zone on the planet Nekrotafeyo. This quirky quest becomes available after players progress through the main story and complete "The First Vault Hunter." Initiated by talking to the NPC Sparrow, the mission tasks players with retrieving valuable research belonging to the legendary explorer, Typhon DeLeon. The quest unfolds with a bizarre encounter involving aligning energies, lying on a couch, and creatively vandalizing a canvas with paint. This unusual therapy session leads to a confrontation with Tern, the seemingly deranged keeper of the research. The core of "Homeopathological" lies in the moral choice presented to the player. Upon opening the "Box of Tranquility," Tern attacks, giving players two options: kill him or allow him to defeat them non-violently. Opting for the pacifist route requires careful preparation, necessitating the removal of shields or skills that automatically damage enemies, ensuring no accidental harm comes to Tern. Successfully completing either path, violent or non-violent, results in Tern dropping the required memory core, which the player must then return to Sparrow to complete the mission. Completing "Homeopathological" rewards players with experience, money, and the unique Incendiary assault rifle, Amber Management. This Torgue weapon is distinctive for its full-auto "Anger" mode, a rarity for Torgue rifles, which grants stacking damage bonuses per kill, visually represented by the weapon's igniting exhaust pipes. However, these stacks are lost upon switching weapons. The alternative "Happiness" fire mode offers a healing projectile, removing all built-up Anger stacks. While the potential for doubled damage exists, the weapon's base stats and inconsistent healing can limit its overall effectiveness compared to other endgame options, although characters like Moze can leverage its incendiary and splash damage properties. The mission's meta-commentary on the game's core loop and its memorable interactions make "Homeopathological" a notable side quest within Borderlands 3.
