However, their conversation is abruptly interrupted when a group of assassins, known as the Whalers, attacks. Despite Corvo's efforts to defend the Empress, he is overwhelmed and witnesses her murder at the hands of Daud, the leader of the assassins. In her final moments, Jessamine entrusts Corvo with the mission to find Emily, solidifying his role as both protector and avenger. The prologue sets the stage for the game's rich narrative, blending themes of betrayal, loss, and the struggle against tyranny, while also introducing players to the mechanics of stealth and combat that will be crucial in their journey through Dunwall.
