World of Goo 2
Description
World of Goo 2 is a physics-based puzzle game building upon the beloved original, challenging players to construct structures using different Goo Balls to reach an exit pipe. The sequel, developed by 2D BOY and Tomorrow Corporation, introduces new Goo types and significantly, realistic liquid physics, allowing for new puzzle possibilities like routing water. The game maintains the original's distinct art style and quirky narrative, exploring themes over long periods through its five chapters and over 60 levels. Released in 2024, it has been praised for expanding on the original while retaining its charm.
The level "Juicer" appears in the first chapter, "The Long Juicy Road," serving as a hands-on tutorial for the new liquid mechanics. Set 15 years after the first game, this chapter sees the return of Goo Balls and the rebranded World of Goo Organization. In "Juicer," the central task is to manipulate a body of liquid using Ivy Goo. Players must build a structure with Ivy Goo that allows the liquid to flow into a winding maze. The purpose of guiding the liquid through this maze is to reach and awaken dormant Common Goo Balls situated at the end of the path. Once active, these Common Goo Balls become available for the player to use, potentially in conjunction with the initial Ivy Goo structure, to build a path all the way to the level's exit pipe.
Ivy Goo, featured prominently in "Juicer," are a versatile type of Goo Ball also present in the original World of Goo. They are characterized by their three connection points and the key ability to be detached and reattached to existing structures. This detachability is crucial in "Juicer" and other levels as it allows for flexibility in construction, enabling players to retract or modify parts of their creations. Unlike in the first game, Ivy Goo in World of Goo 2 are not flammable. The level's design, particularly the intricate maze for liquid flow, hints at development concepts like the scrapped "Chain Reaction" level, suggesting a broader exploration of fluid-based puzzle design in the game. "Juicer" was also notably showcased at GDC 2024, highlighting the integration of liquid physics as a core element of the sequel.
