Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Description
*Clair Obscur: Expedition 33* plunges players into a Belle Époque-inspired world facing an annual apocalypse: the Paintress’s “Gommage,” where anyone of a certain age vanishes. Expedition 33, a brave volunteer group from the isolated island of Lumière, seeks to end this cycle of death before the cursed number reaches their own age. The game blends traditional turn-based JRPG combat with real-time dodges, parries, and rhythm-based attacks, offering deep character customization for its six unique "Expeditioners."
Old Lumière serves as a haunting testament to a city fractured by cataclysm. Sixty-seven years before the game's outset, the "Fracture"—coinciding with the Paintress's arrival—split the original Lumière, casting a piece into the ocean to form the current island and leaving Old Lumière as a sprawling, Nevron-infested ruin on the mainland. Early rescue attempts failed, and subsequent expeditions, notably 58 and 42, met their demise within its treacherous confines, often at the hands of the formidable Renoir.
Upon the player’s arrival from Monoco’s Station, a merchant named Mandelgo offers crucial Pictos and a duel that unlocks Sciel's potent ice weapon, Algueron. The party is soon split by Monoco’s botched shapeshifting, forcing players to navigate the ruins from two perspectives. Lune, Sciel, and Monoco traverse Right Street, encountering new enemy types like the Ceramic and Steel Chevalière, yielding valuable weapon upgrades and Monoco’s skills. This path reveals Expedition 58’s ill-fated journal. Concurrently, Maelle, Verso, and Noco explore Left Street, discovering hidden loot and a Fracture Survivor’s journal accessible with the Old Key from the prologue. A dramatic turn sees Verso mysteriously vanish, leaving Maelle to brave the ruins alone with Noco before they find more catalysts and the Auto Rush Pictos.
Both parties eventually converge near the Manor Gardens, a side area offering additional loot and the "Renoir" music record and journal entry within the Manor. The culmination of this area is a challenging rematch against Renoir, a powerful boss with various attacks, including a party-wide silencing pool and a dangerous "vanish" ability. Post-defeat, Old Lumière still holds secrets: new paths reveal Expedition 42’s journal, a Paint Cage yielding Lune's healing weapon Redalim, and the Train Station Ruins, where the optional, stance-switching boss, the Chromatic Danseuse, awaits, offering the Danseso weapon for Verso and the Revive Paradox Picto. Old Lumière is more than a ruin; it's a living archive of past failures and a crucial proving ground for Expedition 33’s desperate mission.
