Borderlands 3 is a first-person shooter with RPG elements, released in 2019. It continues the series' tradition of cel-shaded graphics, irreverent humor, and loot-focused gameplay. Players choose from four unique Vault Hunters and travel to various planets to stop the villainous Calypso Twins and their cult, the Children of the Vault. The Children of the Vault (COV) are the primary antagonists in Borderlands 3. They are a fanatical cult led by the Siren twins, Tyreen and Troy Calypso, who are worshipped by their followers as "The Twin Gods." The COV are a violent, unified bandit force that has gained near-complete control of Pandora through the twins' charismatic, media-savvy broadcasts. They view other Vault Hunters as heretics and seek to claim the power of the Vaults for themselves. The COV are composed of various enemy types, including standard bandits, psychos, and unique classes like Fanatics, Devouts, Tinks, and the powerful Anointed. Their ranks are filled with both generic foes and notable mini-bosses and leaders. They utilize specialized vehicles and broadcast propaganda through "Crimson Radios" and daily "Livescreams" and "Let's Flays," satirizing modern online influencer culture and cult dynamics. In terms of gameplay, the COV also function as a weapon manufacturer, replacing the Bandit brand from previous games. COV weapons have a crude, makeshift aesthetic and lack traditional magazines. Instead, they fire continuously until they overheat, requiring a repair animation rather than a reload. This unique mechanic encourages players to manage firing bursts strategically. COV weapons are typically pistols, assault rifles, and rocket launchers, ranging in rarity and often incorporating parts from other manufacturers. The COV's presence is felt throughout the game's narrative and world. Players constantly fight against their forces, dismantle their propaganda towers, and confront key COV leaders across multiple planets. Their fanatical nature and the Calypso Twins' ambitions drive much of the main story and are a central element of the game's conflict and world-building.
