1-B MUGLY'S MOUND | Donkey Kong Country Returns | Walkthrough, No Commentary, Wii
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Description
Donkey Kong Country Returns, released in 2010 for the Nintendo Wii, revitalizes the classic Donkey Kong series with vibrant graphics, challenging platforming, and nostalgic ties to its 1990s SNES predecessors. Players control Donkey Kong and his companion Diddy Kong as they traverse diverse worlds on Donkey Kong Island, battling the evil Tiki Tak Tribe, who have hypnotized the island's animals to steal their banana hoard. The game features precise controls, cooperative multiplayer, and a variety of obstacles and enemies across eight distinct worlds.
One of the earliest and most memorable challenges in the game is 1-B Mugly's Mound, the first boss level situated in the Jungle world. This level pits Donkey and Diddy against Mugly, a bizarre hybrid creature resembling a rhino, toad, and porcupine, who is under the control of the Tiki Tak Tribe's leader, Krazy Kalimba. The battle takes place in a coliseum-like arena where Mugly initially feasts on bananas before being hypnotized to attack.
Mugly’s attacks consist mainly of charging and slow hopping, each telegraphed by distinct cues: licking his teeth signals a charge, while a small dance precedes hopping. Players must time their movements carefully, as Mugly’s back is the only vulnerable spot, protected by sharp spikes when stationary. During a charge or while eating peanuts thrown by Diddy’s popgun in multiplayer, Mugly retracts these spikes, allowing safe jumps on his back. The fight intensifies through three phases, marked by color changes—from normal to orange, then red—with increased speed and new attacks like a ground pound that sends shockwaves.
The battle concludes after nine successful hits, when Krazy Kalimba emerges dazed from Mugly, requiring a final series of punches to complete the level. Unlike other stages, Mugly's Mound lacks collectible letters or puzzle pieces, focusing purely on the boss encounter. Time trials encourage players to master the fight, with a gold medal achievable by defeating Mugly in under 37 seconds.
Overall, 1-B Mugly’s Mound serves as a crucial introduction to Donkey Kong Country Returns’ boss battles, testing players’ timing, pattern recognition, and cooperative skills, setting the tone for the challenges ahead in reclaiming Donkey Kong Island’s stolen bananas.
