A core part of the experience is collecting countless procedurally generated weapons and gear while leveling up one of several distinct characters. One memorable side mission in Borderlands 2 is "Claptrap's Secret Stash," given by the quirky robot, Claptrap. After helping him reach Sanctuary, Claptrap offers a reward but first lists a series of outlandish and impossible tasks, such as collecting a ridiculous number of brown rocks or defeating powerful bosses. However, these goals are merely part of Claptrap's eccentric rambling. The actual reward, access to his secret stash, becomes available simply by waiting for him to finish his monologue, revealing the stash conveniently located nearby. The mission completion message fittingly states that Claptrap's incompetence allowed early access to his secret stash. This stash functions as a shared bank, allowing players to transfer items between their characters on the same account. This is particularly useful for "twinking," where high-level gear is passed to a lower-level character to make early gameplay easier. In subsequent playthroughs (True Vault Hunter Mode and Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode), an additional stash location appears in Claptrap's own dwelling, located in a closet alongside broken Claptrap units. The inventory is shared between both stash locations. The absurdity of Claptrap's initial demands in this mission is further referenced in Borderlands 3, where some of Claptrap's missions are direct callbacks to the "goals" he listed for his secret stash.
