Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG set in a Belle Époque-inspired world, where a mysterious Paintress annually erases people of a certain age, a process called the "Gommage." Expedition 33 is the latest group from Lumière tasked with stopping her. The Prologue of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, titled "Lumière," immerses players in the island city, introducing its grim reality and core mechanics. It begins with Gustave, tasked with retrieving a rose for Sophie, then using the grapple mechanic while following Maelle across rooftops. A combat tutorial ensues with a duel against Maelle, rewarding players with a Colour of Lumina upon victory. Players then control both Gustave and Sophie, exploring Lumière. Interactions with NPCs reveal the city's plight, while optional activities like finding Chroma and delivering a uniform for Richard's son, Jules, offer early side quests. An optional mini-boss, the Mime, provides combat challenge and rewards a music record and achievement. The gommage ceremony highlights the city's tragic cycle. Afterward, the Expedition Festival introduces more activities. Players can earn tokens by answering historical quizzes or dueling Maelle, exchanging them for items like an unstable Pictos, a new hairstyle, or an Old Key. Giving Jules his uniform earns the Crimson Uniform outfit. The prologue culminates with Emma's speech, seeing Expedition 33 off, before their journey swiftly takes a dark turn.
