Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG where players lead Expedition 33 to destroy the Paintress, a being erasing people based on their age in a Belle Époque-inspired world. Within this world lies Sadness Vale, a somber sub-area in Visages. Accessed through a large mask's mouth, this perpetually rainy zone serves as the final resting place of the failed Expedition 39, marked by numerous graves and a melancholic atmosphere. Players can uncover their fate through journal entries and face unique challenges like Chapeliers inflicting "Exhaust" status and the formidable optional boss, the Chromatic Ramasseur. The vale’s objective is confronting the Sorrowful Chapelier, a boss testing players' ability to overcome grief-themed mechanics before returning to Visages, symbolizing their triumph over sadness.
