Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a turn-based RPG inspired by Belle Époque France, transports players to a world grappling with the "Gommage," a horrifying event where individuals vanish as a mysterious number painted by the "Paintress" decreases annually. The game's prologue, "Lumiere," immediately immerses players in this grim reality. Beginning as Gustave, players are introduced to movement and grappling mechanics before a combat tutorial duel with Maelle. Subsequently, controlling both Gustave and Sophie, the prologue encourages exploration of Lumière, revealing the city's plight through NPC interactions. Optional activities include collecting currency (Chroma), engaging in a side quest to deliver a uniform, and a challenging mini-boss fight against the Mime, which rewards players with music and an achievement. The somber Gommage ceremony unfolds, followed by the Expedition Festival, where players can earn tokens through quizzes and duels to acquire useful items.
