The fog rolls in, gradually covering more of the lawn, making it difficult to see the approaching zombies. This environmental hazard forces players to adapt, relying on sound cues and the brief glimpses of silhouettes within the mist. New plants are introduced to combat this new threat, such as the Plantern, which illuminates the area, and the Blover, capable of clearing the fog entirely and dealing with Balloon Zombies. Aquatic plants like the Sea-shroom also become crucial for the pool lanes. Other new additions include the Cactus for popping balloons, the Magnet-shroom for disarming zombies, the Split Pea to attack both ways, and the Starfruit for multi-directional fire. The zombie ranks also grow more formidable in this chapter. The Jack-in-the-Box Zombie unleashes an explosion, the Balloon Zombie floats over defenses, and the Digger Zombie burrows underground. The chapter introduces unique level designs, including a Vasebreaker mini-game and a final, dark thunderstorm level without fog, where lightning flashes briefly illuminate the screen. Throughout Chapter 4, players must master the use of quick-recharging, low-cost mushroom plants suited for nighttime and carefully manage their sun to deploy specialized defenses against the fog's unique challenges.
