Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based role-playing game that plunges players into a world reminiscent of Belle Époque France, albeit one under a grim curse. Annually, a mysterious Paintress paints a number on her monolith, and all individuals of that age turn to smoke and vanish in an event known as the Gommage. This number steadily decreases, pushing humanity closer to extinction. The game follows Expedition 33, a group of volunteers from the isolated island of Lumière, on a perilous mission to stop the Paintress before she paints "33." The gameplay combines classic turn-based combat with dynamic real-time actions like dodging and parrying, allowing for strategic build customization with six distinct characters. Within this dying world, the Monolith serves as a nexus of distorted realities, and among its chilling reflections is the Tainted Meadows. This area is a dark and perilous inversion of the game's initial, more pastoral Spring Meadows. Upon arrival, adventurers find a checkpoint for respite before facing a landscape now populated by more formidable threats. The familiar Nevrons are present, but they are joined by the enigmatic Clair and Obscur. Clair, a particularly troublesome foe, resists physical and Light attacks, demanding a strategic shift towards elemental, specifically Dark, abilities for victory. The Tainted Meadows also presents an optional, but highly challenging, encounter with a more powerful version of the Évêque boss. Overcoming this formidable adversary yields the "Cleansing Tint" Pictos, a defensive item that boosts health and defense, and crucially, grants Healing Tints the ability to remove all status effects. Further enriching the gameplay experience, the area hosts Mistra, a Gestral merchant offering coveted items. Players can acquire the "Fragaro," a potent lightning-elemental weapon for Monoco that enhances her precision aiming, or the "Energising Cleanse." Additionally, an upgraded "Lanceram" weapon for Gustave can be found here, bolstering his survivability and speed. Exploration rewards players with environmental puzzles, such as a Paint Cage that, once unlocked by destroying nearby locks, grants a valuable Revive Tint Shard, increasing the party's revival capacity.
