WORLD 1-4 - Burt The Bashful's Fort | Yoshi's Island | Walkthrough, Gameplay, No Commentary
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Description
*Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island*, released in 1995 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, is a truly unique entry in the *Mario* canon. Technically a prequel, it beautifully reimagines the *Mario* universe through the eyes of Yoshi, tasked with protecting Baby Mario. The game abandons the traditional "jump on enemies" approach for Yoshi's distinctive abilities: flutter jumps for aerial control, and the ability to swallow enemies, spit them out, or turn them into throwable eggs. A clever health system sees Baby Mario float away in a bubble when Yoshi is hit, creating moments of urgency as the player races against time to retrieve him. Visually, the game eschews the era's 3D trends for a charming hand-drawn, crayon-like aesthetic that has aged remarkably well.
World 1-4, Burt the Bashful's Fort, marks the game's first fortress level and introduces players to a darker, more hazardous interior environment. Gone are the sunny plains, replaced by stone walls and a palpable sense of danger. Early challenges involve navigating around the titular "Burts," spherical enemies who jump in unison, teaching players about timing and precision. The fort is rife with classic castle tropes like falling walls, crushing ceilings, and perilous lava pits that Yoshi must cross using precarious moving platforms. A simple but effective puzzle element is introduced with a locked door requiring the discovery of a hidden key, encouraging interaction with the environment and the strategic use of Yoshi's egg-throwing prowess. The level also hides secrets, including a room of Wild Piranha Plants that guards one of the collectible Smiley Flowers, rewarding exploration.
The climax of World 1-4 is the memorable boss battle against Burt the Bashful. Empowered by Kamek's magic, a standard Burt grows to colossal size. The arena is a flat expanse where Burt attempts to crush Yoshi with his massive jumps. The strategy here is to bombard Burt with Yoshi's eggs. Each hit causes his oversized blue pants to loosen, and after six well-aimed shots, they fall completely. A blushing, exposed Burt then flies around in embarrassment before exploding, a humorous and satisfying conclusion that highlights Yoshi's egg-based combat. Burt the Bashful's Fort is a delightful introduction to the game's more challenging levels, blending engaging platforming, light puzzle-solving, and a boss fight that is both challenging and comically endearing, perfectly encapsulating the game's whimsical spirit.
