World of Goo 2 takes players back to a captivating world of structural building and puzzle-solving using sentient blobs of goo. This long-awaited sequel retains the core physics-based gameplay where players construct bridges and towers by dragging and connecting different types of Goo Balls to guide a required minimum number to an exit pipe. New Goo Ball species and, significantly, liquid physics add fresh layers of complexity to the familiar formula. The game is presented with a distinctive art style and a new soundtrack, all wrapped in a quirky narrative across multiple chapters.
Chapter 1, "The Long Juicy Road," introduces players to the refreshed world, which now rests on the back of a giant, fiery squid creature. This chapter serves as a tutorial for both returning mechanics and new additions like Goo Water, Conduit Goo, and Goo Cannons, also known as Launchers. These Launchers are artillery-like objects that require fueling via Conduit Goo and can shoot either Goo Balls or liquids, depending on the type.
Within Chapter 1 lies the ninth level, "Chutes and Bladders." This level is notable for being the debut of the Liquid Launcher variant of Goo Cannons. Unlike the standard Ball Launchers, which are light gray and shoot Goo Balls, Liquid Launchers are dark red with tentacles, fitting the chapter's squid theme. These launchers are specifically designed to fire streams of liquid, which can be used to push objects or activate mechanisms within the level. Like their Ball Launcher counterparts, Liquid Launchers require liquid to be supplied by Conduit Goo Balls to function. Their firing stops when their liquid supply is depleted, visually indicated by a tired eye animation.
Beyond simply reaching the exit pipe, "Chutes and Bladders," like all levels in World of Goo 2, offers Optional Completion Distinctions (OCDs) for players seeking extra challenge. For this specific level, the OCD criteria are to collect 29 Goo Balls, complete the level in a mere 7 moves, or finish within a tight 33-second time limit. Achieving these distinctions demands a mastery of the level's mechanics, including effectively utilizing the newly introduced Liquid Launchers and understanding how their liquid output interacts with the environment to solve the puzzle efficiently and within the strict parameters. "Chutes and Bladders" thus serves as an important stage for players to grasp the functionality of a key new tool in their Goo-building arsenal.
