The Name Game, Hunt down bullymongs | Borderlands 2 | Walkthrough, Gameplay, No Commentary

Borderlands 2

Description

Borderlands 2 is a vibrant, cel-shaded first-person shooter with role-playing elements, set on the chaotic planet Pandora. Developed by Gearbox Software, it’s renowned for its unique comic book art style, endless procedurally generated loot, and irreverent humor. Players choose one of four Vault Hunters, each with distinct abilities, to stop the tyrannical Handsome Jack and his Hyperion Corporation from unleashing an ancient evil. The game offers cooperative multiplayer, a rich narrative, and a plethora of side quests and DLC, making it a beloved title praised for its engaging gameplay and memorable characters. One of the most memorable side quests in Borderlands 2 is "The Name Game," a humorous and self-aware mission given by the refined hunter, Sir Hammerlock, in the central hub of Sanctuary. Frustrated with the “rubbish name” of ‘Bullymong,’ Hammerlock enlists the Vault Hunter’s aid in finding a more suitable moniker for his upcoming almanac. The quest takes place in the icy region of Three Horns - Divide. The mission begins with Hammerlock directing the player to search five bullymong bone piles to analyze their diets, with an optional objective to kill fifteen of the creatures. After examining the piles, Hammerlock excitedly renames them "Primal Beasts," due to their primate-level intellect. To test this new name, he instructs the player to eliminate a Primal Beast using a grenade. However, Hammerlock’s publisher quickly rejects "Primal Beasts." Annoyed, he proposes "Ferovores," a nod to their ferocious nature. The player is then tasked with shooting three Ferovore projectiles out of the air, a task best achieved by targeting Adult or Slinger variants. Frustration mounts for Hammerlock when "Ferovore" turns out to be trademarked. In a fit of exasperation, he throws caution to the wind and christens them "Bonerfarts." The player is simply instructed to kill five of these newly named Bonerfarts. As the quest progresses, the names of smaller monglets also humorously change to "Primalet," "Ferovolet," or "Bonertoot" to match Hammerlock's latest naming convention. Ultimately, "Bonerfarts" is also vetoed by the publisher. Defeated, Hammerlock resigns himself to the original name, concluding that "bullymong" might not be so bad after all. The mission concludes as the player returns to him for their reward. This quest was an inside joke among the developers, parodying their own internal debates over the creature's name, with "bullymong," "ferovore," and "primal beast" all having been considered during the game's development.
