Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG set in a Belle Époque-inspired world where a mysterious Paintress annually erases people of a certain age. Players lead Expedition 33 to stop her before "33" is painted. Sadness Vale, a sub-area within Visages, is a perpetually rainy, somber zone accessed through a large mask. This melancholic vale, dotted with graves, serves as the final resting place of the failed Expedition 39, whose journal and makeshift graveyard reveal their demise. Players confront grief-inducing magic and unique Chapelier enemies that inflict "Exhaust" upon defeat. An optional, challenging boss, the Chromatic Ramasseur, demands precise parrying. The main objective involves answering "Sadness" to a giant mask, triggering a boss fight against the Sorrowful Chapelier, whose defeat marks overcoming the trial of sadness.
