Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

ລາຍລະອຽດ

*Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel* is a first-person shooter that fills the narrative gap between *Borderlands* and *Borderlands 2*. Set on Pandora's moon, Elpis, and the Hyperion space station, it chronicles the transformation of Handsome Jack from a Hyperion employee into the villain players know. The game retains its distinctive cel-shaded art style and dark humor, introducing new gameplay elements like low-gravity combat, oxygen management with "Oz kits," and new elemental damage types like cryo and lasers. It features four new playable characters—Athena, Wilhelm, Nisha, and Claptrap—each with unique skill trees, and maintains the series' signature cooperative multiplayer experience. The narrative explores themes of power and corruption, challenging players to consider the moral complexities of the Borderlands universe. While praised for its engaging gameplay and story, some found it less innovative than previous entries. Chapter 8, "Science and Violence," in *Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel* is a stark illustration of Handsome Jack's growing ruthlessness and paranoia. The chapter begins with the player, as a Vault Hunter, assisting a scientist named Gladstone in rescuing his colleagues from the Helios space station's Research and Development wing. Initially, these missions appear to be standard *Borderlands* fare, involving tasks that seem to emphasize personal sentimentality and humor. The first rescue is for Dr. Langois, who wants a family portrait. Then comes Dr. Torres, who requires his lost teddy bear. Dr. Grayson's rescue is more combat-heavy, involving a mini-boss. These encounters are interspersed with the side quest "Infinite Loop," where two Claptraps bicker nonsensically about weapon designs. This comedic setup creates a false sense of security. However, the chapter's tone dramatically shifts after all scientists are supposedly safe. Gladstone expresses concern about a potential traitor. Jack, consumed by his escalating paranoia, makes a swift and brutal decision. In a chilling act, he remotely vents the scientists, including Gladstone, into the vacuum of space, deeming it a necessary precaution. This moment is a definitive turning point for Jack's character, showcasing his absolute prioritization of his own perceived security over human life. The chapter title, "Science and Violence," becomes chillingly literal as the pursuit of knowledge is violently suppressed. The aftermath leaves the player with a sense of unease and complicity in the rise of a tyrant, blurring the lines between hero and villain and highlighting the dark heart of Jack's ambition.
