ACT I - Gustave | Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 | Walkthrough, Gameplay, No Commentary, 4K
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Description
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a richly imagined turn-based RPG, drawing inspiration from Belle Époque France. It thrusts players into a grim reality where a mysterious entity, the Paintress, annually erases people of a specific age in an event called the "Gommage." The narrative follows Expedition 33, a desperate mission to stop the Paintress before she erases everyone at age 33. The gameplay marries traditional JRPG mechanics with real-time elements, offering deep character customization and challenging combat.
Act I of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 immediately immerses the player as Gustave, a respected engineer on the titular expedition. His core motivation is clear: defeat the Paintress and secure a future for Lumière's children. The act opens with Gustave disoriented and alone in the vibrant Spring Meadows, his expedition seemingly annihilated. Despair is brief, however, as his research partner, Lune, finds him, and together they commit to locating Gustave’s ward, Maelle, and pressing on.
Their initial journey through the Spring Meadows serves as a tutorial, introducing basic combat against creatures like the Lancelier. A crucial moment of character development occurs during their first camp, where Gustave, despondent, considers abandoning the mission. Lune's resolute reminder of their oath rekindles his resolve. Their search leads them through the unique biome of the Flying Waters, culminating in Maelle’s discovery within a deserted manor. Here, they encounter the enigmatic Curator, who introduces advanced combat mechanics through a trial.
With Maelle rescued, the trio ventures into the Ancient Sanctuary, battling formidable Sakapatate enemies. A mandatory fight against a Robust Sakapatate yields the Sakaram weapon, and the act’s progression through the sanctuary culminates in a boss fight against the Ultimate Sakapatate, opening the path to Gestral Village. This settlement offers a temporary respite, allowing interaction with merchants and side quests. A key event is the arena tournament, where victory against Sciel, a fellow Expedition 33 survivor and Gustave's acquaintance, earns the party the favor of the village chief. It is highly recommended to have Maelle deliver the final blow to Sciel, as this secures her powerful Medalum weapon.
Their journey continues to Esquie's Nest, where, after a peculiar boss fight against Francois, Esquie becomes their loyal mount, unlocking previously impassable rocky terrain and enabling broader overworld exploration. This newfound freedom allows access to optional, high-level areas like the Yellow Harvest, offering challenging bosses and unique rewards.
Act I concludes dramatically at the Stone Wave Cliffs. After battling the Lampmaster and retrieving a crucial item, the expedition faces Renoir, a formidable white-haired man. In a shocking and pivotal moment, Gustave sacrifices himself to protect Maelle, setting a somber tone for Act II. His prosthetic arm, journal, and the Lumina Converter he created are later recovered by Verso, who inherits Gustave’s equipment and skills, carrying his legacy forward into the challenging journey ahead.
