Borderlands 2
Description
Borderlands 2 is a popular first-person shooter with RPG elements set on the chaotic planet Pandora. Known for its distinct cel-shaded art style, humorous tone, and vast array of procedurally generated loot, the game follows Vault Hunters attempting to stop the tyrannical Handsome Jack. Central to Borderlands 2's gameplay is its use of elemental damage, which is effectively introduced through a series of optional missions known as "Rock, Paper, Genocide," given by the arms dealer Marcus Kincaid.
This quest chain, accessible from Sanctuary, acts as a tutorial for the game's elemental types: Fire, Shock, Corrosive, and Slag. Each mission focuses on a specific element. The first, "Rock, Paper, Genocide: Fire Weapons!", has Marcus provide a fire pistol to test on an unarmored bandit, demonstrating fire's effectiveness against flesh.
Next is "Rock, Paper, Genocide: Shock Weapons!". Here, shock weapons are provided to break the shields of a target, highlighting their utility against shielded enemies. The game ensures the player uses the correct elemental type by providing a new target if the previous one is killed improperly.
The third mission, "Rock, Paper, Genocide: Corrosive Weapons!", introduces corrosive damage against a robotic target, showcasing its power against armored foes. Again, using a different element will reset the target.
The final mission is "Rock, Paper, Genocide: Slag Weapons!". This task teaches the player about Slag, an element that doesn't do much direct damage but makes affected enemies take increased damage from all other sources. Players are given a slag weapon to apply the effect, then must finish the target with a different weapon type before the slag wears off. Successfully applying slag and then finishing the target is key. This mission is a good way to acquire a slag weapon early.
Completing the "Rock, Paper, Genocide" series not only rewards players with experience and money but also unlocks a permanent "Target Practice" bandit at Marcus's firing range, useful for weapon testing. These missions are available across different difficulty modes and are a valuable learning tool for mastering elemental combat, a crucial mechanic in Borderlands 2.
